The phrase “opening your pool” simply means getting it ready for use when the weather in your area is warm enough, assuming you live in a climate where you close your pool during the cold winter months.
Opening your pool actually starts the moment you close it, as you can avoid a lot of hassle by maintaining your pool during the winter months. If you’ve properly covered the pool and removed debris and water as it collects on the pool cover, opening the pool is a snap.
Below is a quick checklist for opening your pool:
- Check your pool chemicals (including acidsand bases) to be sure that you have enough of everything you need and that the expiration dates are still good.
- Remove and clean the pool cover. Make sure you let it dry completely before storing it so that it doesn’t mildew.
- Set the pump and filter back up, if you’ve removed or disassembled them.
- Reinstall ladders, diving boards, and any other similar equipment and fittings.
- Remove plugs and check and replace any outlet fittings that need it.
- Refill the water level to its normal level.
- Reset circuit breakers, switches, and any other time clock trippers to their normal operating positions.
- Turn on the water circulation system and clean any debris in the pool. Be sure to run the water circulation system constantly (24 hours a day) for the first three days, as the water needs to be cleaned thoroughly and may need to be backwashed frequently.
- Sanitize your pool and shock it.
- Balance the water chemistry.
